“Diamonds
are a girl’s best friend.” For me, this
quote is quite true as my passion for art and gems
began at age six in my backyard hammering open rocks
hoping to discover the hidden jewels and daydreaming
about how I would create beautiful jewelry. I am a
third generation jeweler. My Grandfather opened his
first jewelry store in 1925 and for the past 80 years
the Blohm family has been actively involved in the
jewelry business. As a child, I attended the yearly
American Gem Society Conclaves with my parents and
was fascinated at the opportunity of using the microscope
to delve into the rare gems. Working with my father
and grandfather taught me the importance of combining
my artistic creativity with high quality gems and
superb craftsmanship. I feel fortunate to be able
to utilize my passion and skills as an artist and
designer to touch and bring beauty and joy into the
lives of my many collectors.
In order to build on my family experiences and to
satisfy my desire to acquire knowledge, I obtained
my Graduate Gemologist degree from the renowned Gemological
Institute of America (GIA). At the GIA, I learned
to identify, authenticate, and examine gemstones and
became proficient at spectrometry, microscopy, refractive
indices, and solution processes and faceting techniques.
I also received my undergraduate degree in Economics
with a focus on gems and their effects on the economies
of various foreign nations. Finally, the fascination
I had known as a child became an area of proficiency
for me. Having mastered the science of gemology, I
moved to New York City to study art and design techniques
under some of the top jewelry designers in the world
at the Fashion Institute of Technology. I found that
my gemology and design training provided me with the
tools to combine my love of art and design with my
passion for gems.
My travels throughout Europe and Asia and the studies
of the great masters of art provide the backdrop for
my creations. I have tried to capture the styles of
some of my favorite artists in my own designs. Michelangelo’s
daring sculptural strength and imagination has inspired
some of my designs. Van Gogh’s intensity and
use of color move me to experiment with a variety
of colored gems. With my deep admiration of Rembrandt,
I attempt to capture the introspective warmth of humanity
in all of my collections.
I hope you enjoy wearing my designs as much as I enjoy
creating them.
Sincerely,
Deborah M. Blohm
